Sardinha Tejo

The Sardinha by Bordallo Pinheiro collection results from the collaboration between Fábrica de Faianças das Caldas da Rainha, founded in 1884 by Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro, and EGEAC. At its launch in 2015, along with 19 other designers and illustrators, I was invited to adapt my illustration to a ceramics project. Since then it has sold more than 10.000 copies and can be purchased at the Bordallo Pinheiro online store.

Illustration

This project started out as an illustration for Festas de Lisboa, the summer festivities that have the Sardine as their symbol. I later adapted it and refined it to better work as a physical object.

The Tejo Sardine, on sale since 2011, has already sold around 10,000 units and reached so many corners of the world. Every now and then I spot it on someone’s wall and it makes me so proud!

Sardinha Tejo

Sardinha Tejo has the best view of Lisbon. From the river, it can see the people, the roofs and the Castle, it can see the bridge and the boats, the departures and returns that make the city come alive. It's a lucky sardine – and, as Amália said, It has water, it knows how to swim / I wish I were a sardine.
